Top 10 Hair Hacks to Keep Your Hair Looking Salon-Fresh Between Visits
As the holiday season is upon us, we’re all feeling that wonderful rush of festive plans, from holiday parties and family gatherings to cozy nights in with loved ones. But with everything going on, finding time to visit the salon can feel like a luxury that’s hard to fit in. I totally get it—it’s not easy to carve out that extra time for ourselves during such a busy season!
That’s why I’m here to share some of my favorite quick and easy hair hacks that you can try right at home to keep your hair looking fresh and polished between appointments. These aren’t just tips from a stylist—they’re time-saving tricks I believe in and use myself. So, whether you’re rushing out to catch up with friends, attending a holiday brunch, or prepping for a night out, these simple techniques will help you look your best without spending extra time or effort. Here’s a list of the top 10 hair hacks I recommend, along with some insider tips to help you make the most of each one
1. Use Dry Shampoo the Right Way
Dry shampoo is a lifesaver, especially when you’re on the go. But did you know it works best if you spray it in the night before? This allows it to absorb oil while you sleep, leaving your hair fresher by morning. To apply, hold the can about 6 inches away, focus on the roots, and gently massage the product in. Some dry shampoos only come in one tone but Moroccanoil’s new Dry Shampoo comes in multiple options such as light and dark. Just be careful if you use the dark one around your white pillow cases!
2. Boost Your Volume with Velcro Rollers
Want salon-level volume at home? Use velcro rollers after blow-drying. While your hair is still warm, wrap sections around the rollers, focusing on the crown and roots. Let the rollers cool for 10-15 minutes, then gently remove them for that extra lift. This Hair Roller Set has all the perfect sizes for your hair and it comes with a cute little bag to store them all in!
3. Use a Silk Pillowcase
Switching to a silk pillowcase can do wonders for your hair. You have probably read my other blog posts where I recommend the Blissy Silk Pillowcase made from 100% Pure Mulberry Silk. Unlike cotton, silk creates less friction, helping to reduce breakage, frizz, and bedhead. Your hair will thank you—and it’s one of the simplest hacks for better hair health and shine!
4. Achieve Smoothness with the Right Towel
Using a microfiber towel like the Aquis hair towels we love at the salon helps reduce frizz and prevent damage. Simply wrap your hair gently and squeeze out moisture instead of rubbing, which can lead to breakage. This hack keeps your hair smoother and more manageable after every wash. For my curlies, you want to squeeze your hair from the bottom up with this towel and watch your natural air drying time get cut in half! This towel absorbs so much liquid while keeping your cuticle smooth. It’s a miracle I talk about in THIS blog post you can read right now.
5. Blast Your Blow-Dry with Cold Air
After blow-drying, switch to a cold air setting for a final blast. All blow dryers have this function. You can google your blow dryers make and model and ask it how to use the cool blast to find out how if you can’t figure it out. This trick helps set your style and close the hair’s cuticle, giving it a smoother, shinier finish. Bonus: the cool air can help prevent frizz, perfect for foggy San Francisco days!
6. Sleep in a heatless curler or Loose Braid for Natural Waves
Want beachy waves without heat? Try sleeping in a loose braid. This helps avoid tangling and gives you soft, natural waves in the morning. Want a more curled look, try the Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set that has over 20,000 positive Amazon reviews and is apparently all over TikTok. Pair with a light leave-in conditioner for added moisture overnight.
7. Use a Toothbrush for Flyaways
Struggling with flyaways? Lightly spray hairspray on a clean toothbrush and gently comb down those unruly strands. This hack gives a polished look without weighing down the hair or creating a crunchy texture. Using a flexible hair spray like EVO Miss Malleable Flexible Hairspray will give you strong hold without flaking or being too stiff after. It’s been my go to for all of my in salon blow outs the past few months and I am not switching any time soon.
8. Apply Hair Oil Sparingly
A little hair oil goes a long way. Apply a pea-sized amount of oil only to the ends of your hair to keep them hydrated and sleek. Too much oil at the roots can weigh your hair down, so focus on dry areas and never go above half way up your hair shaft near your roots. This will ensure you keep your hair from falling flat or becoming oily too soon.
9. Try the Hair Flip for Extra Volume
For a quick volume boost, flip your head upside down and blow-dry for a few seconds. This will lift your roots, creating instant fullness and volume, especially if your hair tends to flatten at the crown. Don’t forget a little Miss Malleable to help hold her up after the flip!!
10. Hydrate with a Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment
Healthy, hydrated hair is always in style, so don’t skip out on deep conditioning. Try doing this once a week—especially during colder months when hair tends to get drier. My recommendation for at home deep conditioning treatments is going to be, Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Hair Mask. Better yet, take advantage of our “treat yourself” promotion and get a complimentary scalp or deep conditioning treatment at your next appointment(only good through November 30th 2024)!
